Noise Gate
An audio processing tool used to reduce or eliminate background noise by muting audio signals below a certain threshold.
Noise gates are commonly used in podcast production to ensure a cleaner and more professional sound. When an audio signal level falls below the set threshold, the noise gate closes, effectively cutting off the signal and preventing unwanted noise from being heard, such as breathing or other low-level noises when the host or guest is not speaking. Properly set noise gates help maintain the clarity of a podcast, however it is important to set the threshold correctly; if set too high, the noise gate may cut off sections of the desired audio that do not exceed the threshold, such as softer speech.
