Signal-to-Noise Ratio
The ratio of the desired audio signal to background noise.
When recording a podcast, the desired audio signal is your voice. The greater the signal-to-noise ratio, the clearer your voice will sound, while the background noise becomes less prominent. There are two ways to increase this ratio, the first is by increasing your desired signal and for this good microphone technique is vital. If you are talking directly into the microphone from an appropriate distance, your voice (the desired signal) will come through loud and clear, increasing the strength of the “signal”. The other is by reducing the unwanted background noise, which you could do by sound-treating the recording space. By allowing less background noise to affect the recording, you are reducing the “Noise”.
